If you are having a hard time getting off the couch or away from
the computer to inject exercise into your life, online coaching
services have been created to inspire you to get started without
ever leaving the easy chair. One of these Web sites, Myicoach.com, has witnessed a
significant increase in traffic since President Bush recently
called on Americans to get more active.
Perhaps it's my cynical side taking over, but isn't it just a
bit ironic that people are turning to a service accessible from
a computer for advice on getting fit. Part of the reason that
we're an overweight country is that we spend too much time at
the computer.
OK, I'll remove my cynical cap for a minute to extol the power
of the Web and its link to fitness improvement.
Services such as Myicoach.com have a place in the fitness
community and should serve as a resource for aspiring athletes;
however, they shouldn't become a replacement for real live
instruction.
Much like the RTN Beginners Beat column, these services
and Web sites should offer information and guidance and suggest,
not dictate.
Clearly, this country needs all the resources it can get. After
all, according to government statistics, physical inactivity
contributes to 300,000 preventable deaths a year in the United
States.
It's time we all spend a little less time in that easy chair.
