They met in at a summer track meet, both attended the University
of Texas, were married January 2000, and are now making names
for themselves on the North Texas road racing scene.Coby Bullard took a couple of years off to concentrate on his
career. Now in a position to work less and train more, the 23
year old is doing just that. His wife Dana, 24, trains in the
morning and lunch, sometimes with Katie Lesauvage, he runs in
the evenings mostly alone. The system has worked well for both.
Coby, who has always had more success at shorter distances-he
clocked a 3:53 1500 while competing for the Longhorns, turned in
a pair of 15:57 5ks this spring and summer. Dana, who ran a best
37:42 track 10k for the Longhorns, just won the White Rock
Marathon, with bigger plans down the road. "This week," says
Coby, who also serves as Dana's coach, "she did about 60 miles,
but her long run has only been 14. She's got lots of years to
go, and she'll build her mileage slowly."
She will do Austin's Motorola Marathon in February, and knows
that she's only 11 minutes shy of qualifying for the 2004
Olympic Trials, an achievement she says is, "an outside goal."
Coby plans to stick with the shorter stuff. "I'm going to
concentrate on 5k's," he says, "that way, I don't have to train
so hard."
