Subject: Flu and Marathons IP: Logged
Message: having succumbed to a bout of the flu, on wednesday jan 9 and now on antibiotics, what are peoples view of running in the compaq marathon on jan 20 - i was well trained for a 4:30 time. Comments / thoughts, especially from people having been in a similar situation!

Message: Obviously, the best thing to do is to get healthy again as quick as possible. Beyond that, there's not a lot more that you can do.
However, all is not lost. Recall that you've put in months of work preparing for this event. You're not going to lost all that training in just a few days. It will be important to "get your legs back under you" with a few easy runs (when you first start back running after recovering, you'll probably feel pretty crummy).
Another way to look at this: the cold kept you from overtraining! The last couple of weeks prior to marathon day should be spent tapering -- the flu just "forced" a taper on you. Too many marathoners spend the last couple of weeks trying to get a few precious extra miles in, when they should be doing exactly the opposite (which is what you did).
