Message: The RTN staff photographers took 22 rolls of film from the race and we have a number of outstanding photos from the race. It was our original plan to have those photos posted the day after the race, as we usually do for most events.
Unfortunately, we have had to spend a lot more time cleaning up loose ends with regards to publishing the story, photos, and results in the February issues of Runner Triathlete News and Inside Texas Running. Something had to get pushed to the back burner, and in this case, it was the photo gallery.
Hang tight -- we have a slew of excellent photos. They'll be up in as soon as we get the magazines done (of course, we're saving the best photos for the magazines...)!
Lance Phegley
P.S. I've responded privately to several people who have inquired about the photo gallery via e-mails. I should have posted an update on the message board for everyone -- sorry.

Message: The official race photographer was MarthonFoto.com You can go to their web site, click the Compaq Houston Marthon, enter your last name and bid number and see your individual photos.

Message: Be careful with marathon foto--I have had less than desireable results with them in the past.Their pictures are expensive and the results suck.Last year they sent a poorly enlarged pic of me crossing the finish line without the clock(which was in the proof). The next attempt had my head and clock but no legs or feet.Just poor enlarging(basic photography). In '96,they flubbed my Boston shots with more of the same shoddy developments. This year it seems I find no shots at all comming under the clock--just a tired shot near memorial park. The Houston Marathon needs to drop Marathonfoto and go back to what they had before.Marathon Foto sucks!

Message: I, too, was dissappointed in my pictures at MarathonFoto.com. I was expecting something near the finish. Mine were also just random shots somewhere in the middle of the race. The pictures on RTN look great. Too bad I'm not in any of them.

Message: Joanne Russell photography was the official marathon photographer for many, many years. The past two years have been MarathonFoto.com. The Joanne Russell pictures were always of the finish line WITH the clock in the picture as well as pictures around mile 20-21. They were much better pictures. MarathonFoto happened to get 9 pictures of me, two of the finish, but neither had the finish line clock. :-(

Message: It is apparent that alot of things fall short of expectations in regards to the Houston Marathon experience. I think that with all marathons things do not allways receive the level of attention that runners now expect. There are a few things that keep coming to the front of the conversations and I hope they receive more attention next year.
1. I think that a marathon the size of Houston should go with a computer timing system that is more reliable and widely accepted. (Champion Chip) I mean I do not see Chicago, Boston, NYC, LA, Austin, and ect. using some NO NAME BRAND TIMING SYSTEM.
2. How about using a Photo company that worked in the past! Those clowns at marathonfoto have been messing up pictures for a long time... give a local a chance maybe??
3. The Food thing.....I know Steve Karpas has already steped up and explained the issues with this. And I am looking forward to the fix for next year.
In short nothing ever will be perfect with a marathon. And I think it is great for race directors that there are forums for runners to let there comments be heard. Lets all remember that these events are very easy to join in and run on and on.. But race directing is very time consuming and things can be missed.
Thanks for the Race Houston.
