Message: I am a female triathlete.
I have been training really really hard to get ready for tri season. BUT I have gained 10 pounds since December. Some facts to consider I am not new to this sport, this weight gain is abnormal for me. I drink maybe 2 beers a month, I eat really well with the ocassional slip up.

Message: Hi.
I would be curious if you know 'how' to eat right, (If weight loss is your goal) An obvious step would be to avoid the later meals and to make sure that they consist of relatively low carbohydrate intake. Maybe your choices have not been that good.
But, maybe they have. I ran a bunch (8) of marathons one year and I definitely gained weight. The bottom line here is that muscle weighs more than fat, so if you wanted to monitor what your body is doing, you need to have more of a focus on body composition than just weight.
I'd ask, what is your goal? Faster triathlon times, longer distance race, weight loss, body composition. You can't be a body builder and do ironman; you simply cannot keep the lean mass gains while putting in those types of training hours. So you have to have an idea of what you are trying to accomplish.
I'd say, the number one thing, without knowing anything about you, would be to learn what the values of food are. Eat more scientifically. Don't eat a high glycemic index food unless it's early in the day or you're getting ready to go train. There is a site for glycemic indexes:http://www.glycemicindex.com
it can give you some good info.
I hope that may offer some insight for you. Good luck!

Message: I can assure you that you have not gained 10 pounds of lean muscle due to running, in fact it is more likely you have lost lean muscle due to running. More than likely, your body is retaining more water due to the necessity of the strains it is being put under and because of your running you have probably eaten more carbs than usual, which cause you to retain water as well.
Portion control is always your best bet. I would suggest how many calories you need, but I need a little more information. If you would like, you can contact me at [email protected] or call my office for LIfestyle COnsultants of Sugar Land at 281 434 6100 and I can help you out.
Good Luck Training
