nboka ... where did you get that chip time is not as reliable as gun time ?? there are a few cases where people are missed at the start, and they are assigned their gun time as their chip time, but as far as "accuracy" goes, the two are equally reliable ...

Kent,
Maybe reliable isn't the best word. Available might be better. The chip system gets a finish time for everyone but it misses some of the start times because too many feet are hitting those mats nearly simutaneously. Therefore a chip time is not available for everyone. If chip times were used for awards the first thing you would hear would be, "I started next to so-and-so and his chip time was 5 seconds faster than his gun time so I need 5 seconds taken off of my gun time and that would move me up to third place."
That's why gun times (still using the chip system) have to be used for awards. The finish times produced by the chip system are much more accurate than the old method of a human pressing a button on a timer.

I will agree, we DO miss a few at the start because the technology just isn't quite 100% failsafe. We typically get 96-98%, but in a 2000 person race like Bayou City 10K, that 2-4% the system can't handle is a pretty significant number. The good news is that we are about to add two NEW "yellow boxes" (called controllers). These new ones are digital and have internal power boosters that should improve our performance. No, we'll probably never get 100%, but we're trying to do better at every race.

I'm happy most races stick with gun time. The Rodeo Run attracts a huge amount of non-runners. I think this is their reason for chip time results rather than gun time. I think the chip has two good reason 1-fast results, don't you remember having to wait & wait to find our where you placed? Now if you can usually find your rank within minutes. 2-chip time is for personal use. The gun time is the best as you can tell who you are racing against.
