I have been mountain biking for over a year and am considering competing in a few tri's. Don't know a thing about it and would welcome any ideas on how to get started. I am thinking of doing one at the end of August and need to know if I've given myself enough time to train? What is a reasonable distance I should consider for a race? How do I go about getting lessons/training in swimming? What kind of gear is needed? Are there other websites that I need to check out? As you can tell I need help! Thanks to anyone who has the time to reply!

The first thing that I would do is to get in the water and swim. With a masters or some other team is the best for stroke work and for the motivation factor.

A good goal is to shoot for 2 workouts a week in each sport. That's 6 workouts a week. If you are cycling already, then you will probably do more than that. I would try to stick with the hard day/easy day routine or a two hard days/one easy day routine.

Your best bet is probably to first participate in a sprint triathlon or one with a pool swim since some of the open water swims can be a little bit undaunting for new athletes.

Just my $0.02.

I too am looking to start Tris.My wife does them and I have been running and bikeing with her for a while. She has been trying to teach me to swim and I swim like a rock and this is what is keeping me from doing even a sprint tri.I have read Total Immersion Swim and the book has some great tips but the problem is me doing them.Good luck to you and if I can ever swim just a little I will be there too.

Thanks to everyone who responded. Bill, I too am not a swimmer, but am going to take lessons and then join a team in Plano. I have been reading lots of books, websites, and magazine articles. I started training seriously last week and now just need to add swimming to my list. I am planning on doing the sprint in either Rockwall or Sugarland in August. Does anyone have anything to say about any of these two events? Bill, good luck to you and go for it!

Rockwall should be a good tri to start with. I hope so atleast because I am planning on doing it as my first tri too. "Ironhead" Jack puts on good races. I have done alot of his duathlons and am looking forward to the Rockwall tri at the end of August. Good Luck to you!

Need advice on swimming locale

I live in nearby Frisco and have been contemplating swimming as cross-training to my marathon running. However, I have never taken a single swimming lesson in my lifetime. I just want to be able to freestyle and make the turns at each end of the pool. Do you have any ideas of where I might be able to find lessons and a pool to swim in near us?

Thanks!

FriscoRunner,

I have been investigating for over a week on swim lessons, coaches, places to swim. Here is what I have found:

Frisco Parks - 972-335-5517
McKinney Parks - 972-547-7480
Allen Parks - 972-747-4150
Plano Parks - 972-941-7250

Don't know a thing about Frisco.

McKinney High School natatorium has strange hours and really not good. No swim lessons available right now.

Allen - Adult Coast Program meets M-T from 7-8pm. There are only 4 people right now. The coach is Jennifer. She is supposed to be calling me. She teaches private lessons $35/30 minutes or you can join this Coast Program for around $80/season. I think this season lasts until the end of July.

Plano - Bob Solow is the coach. Master's Swim Team called the Plano Wet Cats. They meet M-F 5:30-6:30 am and Sat. morning. I went to observe last Friday and really liked what I saw. He said he has 30 or so triathletes in the program. He does alot of drill and then the swimmers can do what they want. He seemed like a great coach with a nice personality. He is the only coach that has actually responded to me. He says to come on down and get in, but with no experience, I would feel like an idiot! So, I am trying to find some reasonable lessons first, and then I think that is the route I'm going. That way you have the support of a coach and it is a great way to learn from others. He also writes up training programs for some and will stay later to help out with technique. It is $35/mo. or $90/3 months. I do believe there is an extra cost to be able to use the pool at other times. With his program, the pool is available until noon or so.

Email me at [email protected] if you have any questions and let me know what you find out. I think it is just more difficult for us living more north to find exactly what we are looking for. Oh, you may try the YMCA in certain towns. They give lessons, but they may be given by very young adults.

Hope this helps!
