Message: I just started swimming, and I was wondering about how much time you lose going from the pool to open water in a 800m swim.

Message: There's a couple things that affect your time difference. One is visibility. You don't have a black line on the bottom to follow, so you zig zag a little which wastes time. What I doin the pool is close my eyes when my face is in the water then look up when my head is out to simulate looking for the bouy in open water. The other difference is no walls to push off of every 25m. What I do to simulate that is stop at the wall, turn, and push off just enough to plane my body out, but not give myself any forward momentum. If anything this will make you go even slower than you will in open water.
In the pool, I do a little better than 8 1/2 min per 500m. At the capitol of texas tri, I did the 1500m just shy of 26min. I hope that helps.
