Message: Why does marathon man sound so negative about the changes? Change is often good! The race is starting at 7am and the course is open for 6 hours. Both of these are tremendous news for the running masses and it's about time -- many have lobbied for these changes for years. As for the change in race director -- "dumped" seems a little strong. It was reported that he stepped down. If he stepped down due to the changes in race start time and duration, then so be it. I've heard that he's been against it all along. Popular opinion is for the changes.
It's about time that the Houston running community rally behind our marathon. It's a great event with the addtion of the half-marathon and everyone should make it a priority rather than Austin and other races.

Message: Still no prize money though. Times will never be as fast as they used to be. That's a shame too. I like the earlier start time though.

Message: I've heard the prize money is a "sponsor issue" and Compaq/HP wants to keep it the way it is (just a rumor, though). Sure you'd like to see faster times to give the race more attention (nationally, I guess), but as an average (or maybe a little better than average) runner, why should I really care ?? It's not going to affect me either way.
As far as extending the time limit to 6 hours, if you can't WALK that fast you really shouldn't be out there (exception if you're > 80-ish years old). Maybe that's my opinion only, but it can't be good for you to "exert yourself" for that long when you're obviously not trained for it. But then again, why should I care ?? If the race wants to generate additional (gross) revenue and allow more people to participate, why should we stop them ?? Think they're going to be in your way ?? Maybe the rude people who crowd up near the front when they have no business being in the race at all, but maybe those people will keep some other runners from going out TOO fast.
A good suggestion might be to have additional medical personnel out there for those people who blow a coronary artery trying to squeeze under that "magical" 6-hour barrier ... P-uh-lease !!!!

Message: First
I think that the Managing Director
hp houston marathon said to stay tuned? So I think with that said.... all should wait and see what the Major changes will be.
Marathon/man Running/man have all the info maybe you should leave a link to your web sites so we other less informed runners can get the latest scoop on the Houston Marathon.
It is obvious that some runners are able to get to some source of published information that not all of us can get to. Because I have been unable to find in print (other than this message board)about the changes with the Houston maraton. So there is really no reason to get negative or positive about anything until we see some source of printed proof.
Seems like every year there is rummors of change with the marathon and like every other year we just have to wait and see how it works out.

Message: We have yet to receive any official announcement from the marathon regarding any "major changes." There was information in the Chronicle about what Marathon Man was talking about.
Seems a little odd to me to keep the running magazines in the dark about any changes. As Glenn W. said, we're the best place to reach the runners.

Message: Steve, you might want to check your media database. Your office called and said they had our old fax number (one we haven't used in a couple of years).
Course a simple phone call from you ahead of time would have solved all of this.
