Subject: Kempner "3.4" mile race IP: Logged
Message: I noticed you have the Kempner Cross Country 5K race listed at 3.4 miles. Having run in that race I suspected that the race course was something in excess of 3.1 miles. Has it been confirmed that it was 3.4 miles?
Thanks,
Randy

Message: I was testing a new Timex watch that has a GPS feature. It uses this technology to tell you how far you have run (as well as how fast). When we went off course in the first half-mile, I knew that it was going to come in handy.
The GPS unit measured the actual distance of the race at slightly under 3.4 miles (I don't recall the exact total -- it measures to the 1/1000th of a mile). I think the "exact" distance was ~3.35 miles - roughly 1/4 mile longer than 5K.
When I sent the results to the Houston Chronicle, I indicated that the race was approximately 3.4 miles. Someone there changed it to 3.1 miles when they printed the results.
