Having run in that race I suspected that the race course was something in excess of 3.1 miles. Has it been confirmed that it was 3.4 miles? It uses this technology to tell you how far you have run (as well as how fast). When we went off course in the first half-mile, I knew that it was going to come in handy. The GPS unit measured the actual distance of the race at slightly under 3.4 miles (I don't recall the exact total -- it measures to the 1/1000th of a mile). I think the "exact" distance was ~3.35 miles - roughly 1/4 mile longer than 5K. When I sent the results to the Houston Chronicle, I indicated that the race was approximately 3.4 miles. Someone there changed it to 3.1 miles when they printed the results. Lance Phegley P 1
