 Subject: Bike for 9 year old

My 9 year old is looking to try a triathlon. What type of bike do most kids that age ride.? He is small for is age. Don't want to invest alot at initially. He currently has a 20inch with no speeds. Should we just go with a basic 3 speed bike.

How tall is your 9 year old? I have a very small women's bike {alas it is pink!} that I did tri's on for several years that I would be willing to donate to an 'up and comer'. It is a "Dave Scott Ironman" Centurion frame...a bit heavy, but it served me well for several years.
