I'm 40 years old, I run a 5k in 23:15 , I have bike times in the 39 / 41 min mark, but I'm unsure of where to start looking for a place to trian in the winter months for swim.

Also I'm looking for a good website for training tips, clothing, ect... Where do I start? And, are my times even competitive?

Please reply.
Thanks
Chris

Chris,

As far as swimming goes find a Y or something, as my finances are stretched thin being a college student I swim in the outdoor pools that I clean during the winter...I use a wetsuit.

With your times...don't worry about it...just train and race...have fun...

Clothing....all you need for a race is a pair of tri shorts which is a pair of bike shorts with thin or no padding. A trisuit which is a one piece combined singlet short can be used also....some will gove you their opinions on this for and against.....I'm still a newbie and am just worried about losing weight and getting my times down....I'm sure some die hard trigeek can pontificate for hours on the subject.

The best thing to do is pick a race and do it....then pick your next race....I find racing keeps me motivated to train.

Chris,
Find yourself a swim team and coach and start swimming. You can locate swim clubs at USA Swimming on the web. My wife and I swim with an age group team (mostly high school age kids) so don't worry about being too old. Ride as much as you can since the cycling leg of triathlons is always the longest of the three events. Stick to shorter races (with 5K runs) until you get the hang of racing. Don't worry about being competive because you need to gain experience first. The competition varies from race to race depending on who shows up and the course and weather conditions. The idea is to have a good time.
