Message: I am a new runner, only 3 5ks.I ran the turkey trot this past thanksgiving only had about 1/2 mile left and had pain in my rt foot that took me down.I walked a few steps and it felt better and I ran in.This was a trail run and was muddy.I wore a pair of old newbalance running shoes.Today I can not hardly walk on my foot, bruising onrt side and swollen.Does this sound like a busted blood vessell or ligament. hot or cold soaks should i place an ace on for support. new runner wants to return

Message: Owie! Gail, that could be any number of things. I have always heard that ice right after the injury and heat thereafter is the way to go.
If the swelling and pain don't go away soon you definitely want to see a doctor. A little pain is ok but swollen and sore to the point where you can barely walk is not normal.
As you said it could be a blood vessel or a ligament - or it could be a stress fracture or something equally yucky.
Anyway, see a professional, take care and see you at the races!
