Subject: 2002 Dome Run 5K IP: Logged
Message: Just wanted to thank all sponsors for the Dome Run on Sunday - a good race, and a good turnout. However, I was dissappointed that the 5K race was not actually 3.1 miles in length. I realize the 5K was non-competitive, but it certainly was shorter than 3.1 miles. Secondly, and maybe it's because it was a Sunday race, but since there was a beer sponsor, many of us expected beer refreshments to be provided after the race. Perhaps you could explain this one to us. Also, for that many people, their was a limited assortment (not supply) of foods and refreshments available. Finally, I miss the space to move around like we had in the Dome. Pretty cramped area sectioned off for that many people.

Message: Hello Jay,
Thanks for your input on the race.
Regarding the 5K, the race course (5K) was
changed on Sunday (day of race) due to
construction and police requirements/
mandate. We (the race team) had no control
over this.
Beer can not be served prior to 12 p.m. on
Sunday, as it is a state law. If you would like,
I would be happy to buy you a beer
sometime. :)
The area that we were limited to for the post
race party, was determined by Reliant
Stadium. They would not allow anybody on
the field, which limited the amount of space
we had to work with.
As for the assortment of food, we had
apples, bananas, water/Powerade, and
bagels. What else would you have liked to
seen offered?
Thanks again to all the runners and
spectators who came out!

Message: I ran the 10K and I liked this course much better than last years. However, the last .2 miles had too many turns! I assumed (incorrectly) that it would be a straight shot down the ramp to the center of the field, as had been the case in previous Dome Runs.
I was a little curious, as well, why there was a beer sponsor that did not provided their product. They knew it was a Sunday before they chose to be a sponsor.
I enjoyed finishing in Reliant Stadium and it was a good idea to give it a try. However, if it were up to me, I would move it back to the Astrodome because of the straight shot finish down the ramp and ample space on the sidelines for the after race party. Reliant Stadium just does not offer the abundant space necessary for this type of event.
Thanks again for a good race and I will be back next year!

Message: If 3 to 5 thousand runners had shown up it would have been a real disaster at the finish. It was aggravating to not have room for the post race party. Only one narrow stairway off the floor was poor planning and inadequate for the numbers that did turnout. The dome was a much better setup. If it's not possible to return to the dome then you need to move the post race stuff up on the first level concourse. The drawback is you can't really see the field from there.

Message: Overall I thought the 10K was great. I even told my brother from San Fran he needs to come down and run it just for the high of coming in the stadium for the finish. For most of us ground pounding clydesdayles we never get a real rush like that at the tape. Some minor points for improvement. Post game party was more like a mosh pit. I realize they don't want a thousand runners killing the grass but you really had a fire hazard with all those people jammed in like cattle and only one exit. The first 1/2 mile or so was very narrow and if you weren't perfectly paced up you could not pass. I really liked the out and back course as the people going the other way gives you a chance to cheer and makes the race go faster. Great job. Great race and great organization. I'm really surprised there wasn't A LOT MORE people. Run on!
