Message: Overall a great race. Positives: Loved the point-to-point swim. It was nice not having to navigate into the sun. Bike course was free of debris, accurately measured and even featured a few rolling hills (OK, overpasses) to break up the monotonous flats. The volunteers were great! Also, the after race was terrific. Nothing beats an ice-cold post-race beer at 9:30am.
Negatives: 50/50 shirts? Come on! You have to have all-cotton races shirts. No splits? National championship-caliber races should at lest offer official splits, if not ChampionChip timing. Wasn't the last mile of the run a little long? Based on my own splits, it seemed so. Also, though it didn't affect me because I was in wave #1, 7-minute stagger between waves is a bit much. I would have hated to have been one of the ones finishing at 11 am.

Message: I totally agree with Jim with regard to both positives and negatives.
I would like to add that the awards were precious, and that they were made by students was a fitting tribute to how the money will be used (scholarships).
Couple more negatives:
-any race this size should use the chip.
-there wasn't even a clock at the finish.
Timing nightmares aside, the tallying of results took entirely too long. Based on my informal survey of frustrated racers waiting in the hall, we have several questions/suggestions:
Why not have the awards ceremony at the park? No delay, no moving down the road 12 miles, no sitting in the lobby.
If you are going to make us wait, at least let us in the room. This suggestion was met with, "well they're working with numbers and stuff"...could this mathphobic comment be the real reason for the delay in results?
If you want the winners to stick around, and many did not, then you have to identify them more quickly. If you want an audience of peers and spectators to stick around that long...well, they didn't, and they won't.
An otherwise well-organized, well-executed event fell to shambles in these details (same story last year) Fix this, and you will have a great race; a Texas legend for all the right reasons.
