O.K. tri geeks give me some advice. I'm looking to buy my first "real" tri-bike. I have the bike picked out, the dealer is a bike shop in a near by city. The plan, go in and say, "here I am I want to buy this bike." Let them fit me and be gone. A biking friend say's I should first go to a bike "fitter" Some guy who does most of the fitting for racers in my area and find out exactly what size frame I should buy. He says that a bike shop may sell me what they have "in stock" and not necessarily the "exact" size. He says it may not make a big difference but at the same time it could. If I want my new bike to have a "perfect" fit should I rely on my local bike shop to do this, or should I consult the "expert" first? What say you? You comments are appreciated.

There has been a lot of discussion on fit, etc. on the slowtwitch.com forum lately. A bike that fits 'perfect' is much better than a bike that looks cool. Ideally, you would be able to walk into any shop and the same person that sells you the bike would be able to fit you to the bike. Unfortunately, a lot of times, it's about moving a bike out the door and the best interest of the customer is not necessarily considered as much as it could be.

The advantage to going into a shop with bikes in inventory is that you will be able to sit on a variety of bikes and make a somewhat well informed decision as to what bike will fit the 'best.' Some of the 'experts' with fitting will not have the ability to let you try a variety of bikes. If they do not have a fit cycle--like the Serotta system--then it will be difficult to play around with a variety of positions.

Email me off line with your location for more info/advice.
