Subject: Double dipping for awards? IP: Logged
Message: Have you seen the article in July RTN about double dipping for awards at races by Jon Warren? As a race director, I would like to know if many others share his view. He thinks double dipping should by required at local races. What do you think? A master could pick up three awards this way. It does not seem right to me.

Message: No I have not seen Jon's article nor, do I wish to! I'm for full listings of all participants in posted race results, no double-dipping, 5-year age brackets up to eighty (80) years of age when pratical and anything else that will "make the pie as big as possible".
Forget about any notions of elitism; this is the 4th largest city in the USA and, on a per capita basis, we have one of the fewest number of scheduled races. Further, how often can one find a race scheduled on a Sunday?
There are far too many within our community that are directly or indirectly impeding the growth of our sport.
Thank you Andy for your contributions to our sport and providing an opportunity to respond to this very sore point with me.

Message: I have not seen the article either. From what you say, I don't agree at all. I would think race directors would like to draw as large a field as possible. I think 5 year age groups and NO double dipping contribute to that. Those of us who occasionally place when the usual age group winners don't all show up, know there are any number of people in our age group who can beat us. It is still fun, however, to get an award every once in a while. Why not have as much incentive as possible?

Message: I haven't read the article either. I think there should NOT be any double dipping. The Top three of a race should get awards (male and female) and then taken out of the awards in there age group for awards. I was lucky enough to get an overall awad once and the race director called me up again to claim the age group award. I declined it and passed it on to the second place finisher. That was much appreciated.

Message: I understand what he's saying but I would prefer to receive the highest award coming to me instead of two or maybe even three.

Message: I read Jon's article, and I concur with what he is saying. It is not about being and elitist or collecting as many awards as possible, it is about the results being reported properly. To me, it is as simple as this. I'm in the 30-34 age group. If the winner of the race was from my age group, and I was the second finisher from my age group, I was exactly that, SECOND. I would feel like I was cheating myself by taking a first place award when somebody else beat me. I look at it as being honest with myself.
On a related topic...
My feelings are much the same about using "the chip" during races. To me, the race starts when the gun goes off. HOw you can look at it any other way is beyond me. Train harder so you are more qualified to be closer to the start at these races if this is a problem. If you are going to run races with 20,000 people and it takes you 10 minutes to cross the start, well, that's life, and that's running.
No, I'm not an elite runner. The only time I ever win an award is when I go to those races where there are enough awards to go around.

Message: So, based on your logic, if Miss Texas wins the Miss America pageant, the the first runner up shouldn't be moved up to become Miss Texas, since she was technically second. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.
One runner, one race, one award. If there's prize $$ involved, let the runner decide which ONE they wish to claim (since sometimes a master's 1st overall MIGHT pay more than an overall 3rd or 4th if they go that deep).

Message: If the person is fast enough to do it then so be it, if a masters runner takes first over-all he or she was still first in the age. group and first masters. The idea of pulling them out is as silly as age grading.

Message: Yeah if a big whale beats you in the Mustang div., or Colt div., and beats you in the age div. they should get all the awards possible at one race event. We should actually ask for more award div. That way almost only a few runners can get an award or maybe 3 or 4 at one event.
For example, there should obviously be a stumped hoof award div and also a Hang nail div. If one of the large folk win there fat class and there age they should also be able to get the award for a stumped Hoof. It only goes to reason that they should stock up on all the awards.
Really why stop there they should have awards for folks who run the course backwards or for folks who want to run sideways with a person on there back. Then both will be eligible also for there age and since they ran in tandem they can go for those Heavyweight div. like Mustangs and Cots.
Double dip triple dip quad dip no problem. Duplication of awards sounds like nothing new around Houston running so why change now.
I am still hoping for a new start time for the Marathon here in Houston this year (maybe like 5:30 or 6:00am). And how about adding a couple of Hours to the official finishing times like 7 and a half or 8 and a half hours.

Message: Hi Andy,
First, we know you are an RD so thanks for asking. My two cents... I personally don't care for the duplication of awards. Perhaps the results are mis-leading this way, but most times the overall winners are taken out of my age group and it gives me a chance to place. We all know they still beat me, but they got recognized at a higher level than I did. Seems fair enough to me...
Thanks again!

Message: As one who sometimes places and sometimes does not, I'd have to go with no double dipping (or triple, as could have been the case last Friday in Sugarland ...) How many awards do you need from one race???
