Message: tgarr, you say "also" at the end of your message. To me, that implies that you think one TdF rider could wear two "leader" jerseys from different categories at the same time, but that is not true. If a rider is the overall leader, plus is leading another category, he wears the "maillot jaune" only, and the second placed rider in the other category wears the white (young rider), green (sprinter), or polka dot (King of the Mountain) jersey from his category. If he leads two of the lesser categories and not overall, he wears only one leader jersey based on preference/prestige, and the second rider in the other category again wears the jersey from that category.
Example: The winner of the Prologue (short time trial on the first day) is also the leader in the sprint category (since it's the first day). But, on the second day (Stage 1) the leader wears the yellow, while the second place rider wears the green.
Every sport is obviously different on "double dipping", and no one is right or wrong. Personally, I prefer to spread the awards out to as many runners as possible so that good runners, giving their best effort, can be rewarded. To me, Sean Wade is a "professional" runner, and when he wins overall, I don't have a problem getting moved up in my age category. If he gets bumped down into the age group by not winning overall, that's ok too, as I completely accept that.

Message: A new runner on a weight loss program goes to her first race. She is 36 years old and finishes pretty close to last but she finishes and she is happy.
The race gives the top ten runners in each sex Overall awards, BUT they pull these top ten out of the age groups in order to "spread the awards" among everyone.
Six of the top ten female runners are in the 35-39 age group. So, at the awards ceremony this new runner who actually fininsh 7th in her age group was called up and given 1st place in the 35-39, even though, even though there were six other runners in the same age group who finished ahead of her.
Come on...don't tell me that this is fine, there is no problem with this? How ridiculous can it get.
This runner was embarrassed and rightly so. If the race wants to present her with an award give her one for seventh in her age group...not first.

Message: Hey how about the guy who rides double Dutch on there friends back and then stumps there hoof. Don't they deserve an award or two or three!
Im all for adding an award category or division for everyone. Hell lets just start giving out awards for finishing a 5k.
Face it Houston has one of or if not the poorest racing scenes in the U.S. a few if any races on Sundays. Never if ever beer after a race, so why do anything for the runners now anyway. Just keep duplicating awards as usual why change a thing.

Message: 1) I've never seen a race that went 10 deep overall, then gave age group awards. Ok, Boston and maybe some major marathons do, but to do that in a local race is ridiculous. Most races I've been to give only 1 overall, even if there are several thousand runners.
2) I'm sure the race entry form spelled out (or at least should have spelled out) the way awards would be handed out. If your friend didn't like the way awards would be presented, she should tell the race director. Race directors do listen to people when they have suggestions, that's how they improve their races for the future. If she still wasn't satisfied, she should have skipped the race (or plan to skip it next year).
3) If she's too embarassed to accept an award ... well, don't accept it. No problem there. No one's going to force you to take something you don't want.
4) The bottom line is that the race director decides how they want to give out awards. If you don't like it, don't run their race, or set up your own race and hand out awards any way you please. Most race directors bust their asses for very little in return in the way of acknowledgement or appreciation. Most will say you should feel free to suggest changes that will make a race better. Bitching an moaning over something as silly as "I don't want that award" are going to be pretty low on the priority list when you've got so much else to do on race day.

Message: Kent,
My thinking is the guy who leads the tour wears the yellow (one form of recognition) but if he attained enough points to be say King of the sprints wouldn't he keep that title as well?? might not be a different jersey as he would want to wear yellow but that would be his choice and he still would be listed in two classes. I don't know that it would work that way but thats my argument and I'm sticking with it :0)

Message: Hey Kent Most race directors in Houston
have there heads buried ummmmmmm
ahhhhh never mind. But you know what I
mean.
Take for example I have been asking for the
start time to be moved forward to 5:00am
and to extend the official finising time to 8
and 1/2 hours but they will not listen to me
over there at the
HP?Compaq?Methodist?Tenneco?
HOUSTON MARATHON. So that just blows
the whole suggest to the race director thing
right out of the water....????

I can state with 100% certainty that if you made your suggestions to the marathon about the start time and official finish time AND provided a certified check to cover the additional costs involved with your request that they would wholeheartedly embrace your request. Heck, I bet they'd even name it the "oncearunner 8 1/2 hour finishing time" in your honor.
Just because you request something doesn't automatically make it feasible.

Message: Ok, here is a likely scenario:
A runner has an abnormaly large scrotum, and has been battling a bad case of hemorroids for about 2 weeks. He goes to the grocery store and buys some prep H to soothe his affliction. This said runner gets 9th on a local 5k, should he be given an award or should his evil twin recieve one?
As you can see my point is clear and I challenge anyone to refute it

Message: Fred,
Thanks for the advice with the certified check. I understand about ask and receive type of things. But hey they move the time back almost every year and the official finishing time, so I am just requesting what has been done in the past.
Also I am at the moment trying to come up with a new division that I personally can win. Maybe something like 1st HoustonFat Gallowalker!
Xman I hear ya man but I think it may be the evil twin that gets the win.!

Message: the leader in the various categories at the TdF is still the leader in each respective category. Heck, I suspect if he gets to Paris winning more than one category, he gets the first place prize money for all the categories he's on top in!! You bet they double dip there. They just don't need to be wearing 3 jerseys at one time. It would be too hot and you could only see the outermost one....
I just got back from the Dr. and my heart and health are great. I've got all the hardware I need.
