Since Houston is one of the fattest cities in the world, I am more than glad to have as many participants as possible in all of races. I do wish they would at least have two corrals up front. One for elites/invitees, and a second for those with proof they can finish under (a generous) 4 hours or so. I was going for a Boston QT and barely made it. Lost probably 2 minutes in first 3 miles snaking thru obvious 4:30ers who seem to run about 20 abreast (exaggeration).

Waddle, are you one of the walkers that starts with everyone else or one of the many who leave before the race has started in an effort to ensure you make the cut-off time?

Finishing a marathon is a great accomplishment for anyone (we competitive marathoners are a small minority these days); however, the aforementioned is a big problem. I have coached a group of beginning marathoners for the Honolulu marathon (which is self-seeded) in '00 and aside from the training program, I was very specific about etiquette on the roads and starting area with my runners and walkers. However, in that same race some Team in Training chapter took 50 walkers to the 2:30 zone. That sort of thing gives fund-raising groups a bad name and further distances themselves from the ever eternal attempt at maintaining an association with the running community. Even if you are not associated with one of those groups, it is your responsibility to know the rules of the road and be aware of your surroundings--you are not the only one out there! Trust me, it will enhance the marathon experience! Would you do the same thing while driving a car and drive 40 miles an hour and stay in the passing lane?
