Subject: Dallas Turkey Trot IP: Logged
Message: In posting this message, I hope not to offend anyone to whom this might imply. I recently participated in Dallas' premier holiday races, the Turkey trot-8 miler. With an estimated crowd of 20,000 I knew it would be a crazy mix of both serious athletes and families just looking to have a fun time. What I did not expect were the masses who did not heed pre-race announcements and give way those with finishing goals. It is understood that if you don't plan to race, if you run w/dogs & baby joggers, or if you want to walk, please stay away from the front---a common courtesy. I had many a friend who was stuck at start for 5-6+ minutes waiting to move while walkers, etc. took their sweet time ahead. And some cases the offenders were "offended" when runners tried to zip around them to make up time! Also, my big gripe was both the 3 mile and 8 mile started together. Therefore, all the 3 mile finishers were in a feeding frenzy grabbing up all the goods while we were still on the course. Everyone I saw was stuffing their bags full of water bottles, yogurt, etc. Trying to maneuver through everyone was a joke. I really am not the one to gripe, but this time I couldn't help myself...
P.S., with my friend Amy Schuster being one of those stuck in the back, I don't need your f&%$ing opinion, Zetta!

Message: Alright, RICK!!!
FINALLY, someone else feels the same way I do. The Turkey Trot is an awesome race and the race directory and finish line guys (Thruston Racing) have always kicked butt.
HOWEVER, the slow people need to realize they are slow and line up far from the 5:20 pace runners (that's for 8 miles, NOT 3 miles). It really is a shame that the baby jogger/5 hour marathoners need to be up front to feel "a part of the race" to experience the Turkey Trot. Bottom line is...there isn't enough room for ALL of us....therefore, let the ones who've trained very hard and can do the "5:20" pace (not the 8:20 pace) up front and you house wives and weekend warriors politely GET OUT OF THE FREAKIN' WAY!
Thank you and good night,
Scott Huggins
(PS: Rick, how've you been?)

Message: Hey, Scott. This is the first time I've heard so many gripes regarding this year's race as compared to previous ones. You wouldn't notice it since not many responses to my original message. Anyway, if you were running 5:20's, no wonder I didn't see you. I have noticed your running going great. By the way, my congrats to Lisa Massey. 5th O/A. She's making a name for herself really fast. See you @ White Rock marathon???

Message: Well, it is a year and a half later, but I just read your message and so will respond! First of all, I totally agree with you about the race in 2001. That was my first year to do the Turkey Trot and I was EXTREMELY frustrated when the race began. Chip timing was great this past year, but there were still so many walkers in front of me. I line up at the 8-minute marker like I should, and find it hard to believe that people can actually WALK 8-minute miles for 8 miles! :) Seriously though, when I went to the race this year I was mentally prepared for the fact that people would disregard the mile markers, and that helped me. I just ran along the sidewalk for the first mile so that I could pass everyone. It is too bad because it is an awesome race. Perhaps the races should start separately?
