More than 1,000 age group triathletes will be competing this weekend at the USA Triathlon National Age Group Championships on Saturday in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. It is one of the largest start lists ever for the age group championships.

The event will crown national champions in each age group and is also a qualifier for the 2003 International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Championships in New Zealand.

The race will be Olympic distance (1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run) and non-draft legal. Competitors will swim around Coeur d'Alene Lake, and then bike and run around the city of Coeur d'Alene. The bike course is said to be especially challenging. The weather is predicted to be in the low 80s with little chance of rain.

Many of last year's winners have left the age group ranks to become professionals, including women's overall winner Donna Kay- Ness (women 35-39), runner-up Jenny Marine (women 25-29) and men's fourth-place overall finisher Daniel Domingo (men 25-29), leaving the door open for new talent.

Men's 2001 overall winner Bruce Gennari (36; Nashville, Tenn.) is scheduled to return, as is runner-up Patrick Bless (29; Champaign, Ill.).

Other 2001 age group champions on this year's start list are Amanda Stevens (25; Oklahoma City, Okla.), Mac Martin (47; State College, Pa.), Laura Sophiea (47; Plesant Ridge, Mich.), Gar Hackney (53; Boise, Idaho), Jo Garuccio (51; Salt Lake City, Utah), Paula Larsen (57; Horicon, Wis.), Bruce Buchanan (61; Fernandina Beach, Fla.), Susan Bradley-Cox (64; Lexington, Ky.), Roger Brockenbrough (68; Pittsburgh, Pa.), Harriet Anderson (66; San Carlos, Calif.), Art Fredericks (70; Tehachapi, Calif.), Madonna Buder (72; Spokane, Wash.) and Charley French (76; Ketchum, Idaho).

Edith Chan (Athenas 39 and under; San Francisco, Calif.), Joanne Schmitz (Athenas 40 and over; Walla Walla, Wash.) and William Dixon (PC upper extremity; Middleburgh, N.Y.) are also scheduled to return.

Round and Round Productions and the Coeur d'Alene Triathlon Foundation are directing the event is being directed by Round and Round Productions in conjunction with USA Triathlon.
