Barb Lindquist (Victor, Idaho), who is ranked No. 1 in the
world, proved she belongs on top Sunday with a victory over an
impressive pro field at the International Triathlon Union World
Cup race in Ishigaki, Japan.Lindquist used a strong swim and the fastest run time of the day
(39 minutes, 9 seconds) to win the Olympic distance, draft-legal
race in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 53 seconds. She was finally able to
pull away from Australia's Loretta Harrop in the final kilometer
of the run. Harrop and Australia's Nicole Hackett were second
and third respectively.
The United States also had three other women finish in the top
10 as Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich.) took fourth, just
7 seconds out of third place. Joanna Zeiger (Baltimore, Md.)
finished sixth and Siri Lindley (Boulder, Colo.) was seventh.
Susie Stark (Hudson, Ohio) finished at 18th.
In the men's race Joe Umphenour (Seattle, Wash.), a resident
athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs,
Colo., will improve his world ranking after finishing ninth
overall in 1:51:08.
Australia's Peter Robertson won the men's race in 1:49:23 while
Spain's Ivan Rana took second and New Zealand's Kris Gemmel
placed third.
Andy Kelsey (Cupertino, Calif.) placed 16th for the United
States while Doug Friman (Tucson, Ariz.) was 21st and Mark
Fretta finished 29th.
