Linquist wins triathlon at Ishigaki
May 20, 2002

Barb Lindquist (Victor, Idaho), who is ranked No. 1 in the world, proved she belongs on top Sunday with a victory over an impressive pro field at the International Triathlon Union World Cup race in Ishigaki, Japan.

Lindquist used a strong swim and the fastest run time of the day (39 minutes, 9 seconds) to win the Olympic distance, draft-legal race in 1 hour, 56 minutes, 53 seconds. She was finally able to pull away from Australia's Loretta Harrop in the final kilometer of the run. Harrop and Australia's Nicole Hackett were second and third respectively.

The United States also had three other women finish in the top 10 as Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich.) took fourth, just 7 seconds out of third place. Joanna Zeiger (Baltimore, Md.) finished sixth and Siri Lindley (Boulder, Colo.) was seventh. Susie Stark (Hudson, Ohio) finished at 18th.

In the men's race Joe Umphenour (Seattle, Wash.), a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., will improve his world ranking after finishing ninth overall in 1:51:08.

Australia's Peter Robertson won the men's race in 1:49:23 while Spain's Ivan Rana took second and New Zealand's Kris Gemmel placed third.

Andy Kelsey (Cupertino, Calif.) placed 16th for the United States while Doug Friman (Tucson, Ariz.) was 21st and Mark Fretta finished 29th.
