Memorial Day weekend was also a weekend of long distance racing
around the world.
U.S. national duathlon champion Greg Watson (Newark, Del.) held
his own Sunday against some of the world's best duathletes,
placing fourth at the Intervall Duathlon Zofingen in Zofingen,
Switzerland. Jarrod Brauer of Australia won the race - which
consisted of a 4K run, 16K bike, 4K run, 16K bike, 4K run - in 1
hour, 26 minutes, 51 seconds. Christoph Mauch of Switzerland was
second (1:26:58) and Stefan Risen of Switzerland was third
(1:27:10). Watson's time was 1:27:52.
Swiss Olympic gold medal-winning triathlete Brigitte McMahon won
the women's race in 1:40:21.
Slots for Ironman Hawaii were available at Sunday Ironman races
in Florianopolis, Brazil, and Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Michael
Lovato (Boulder, Colo.) was the lone U.S. pro competitor at
Lanzarote and finished 12th overall in 9:32:26. Denmark's Peter
Sandvang won the men's race in 8:48:44.

Ken Glah (West Chester, Pa.) finished 13th among the pro men at
Ironman Brazil. Glah finished in 9:22:52. Winner Spencer Smith
of Great Britain finished in 8:15:38.

Finally, there were Ironman Hawaii slots available at Sunday's
Keauhou Kona Triathlon in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. The race was a
half Ironman consisting of a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and
13.1-mile run.
Chad Hawker (Seaside, Calif.) won the men's race in 3:57:49.
Peter Hursty (Honolulu, Hawaii) was second in 4:09:49 and James
Cotter (Kailua-Kona, Hawaii) was third in 4:11:07.
Age-grouper Michelle Gwozdo (Carlsbad, Calif.) won the women's
race in 4:34:17. Veteran pro Paula Newby-Fraser (Escondido,
Calif.) was second in 4:35:22 and Susan Burr (Honolulu, Hawaii),
another age grouper, was third in 4:41:08.
