5430 Triathlon offers discount to Ironman Utah participants
June 10, 2002

The 5430 Triathlon is offering a significant discount to those athletes who competed in Ironman Utah last Saturday. Due to extreme wind conditions, the Ironman Utah swim was canceled, and the race was shortened to a 70-mile bike and 13.1-mile run.

5430 Triathlon race director Beth Spiegel said, "I know some of those athletes will still be motivated to go the distance, so we'd like to invite them to try our race."

The 5430 Triathlon is set for Sunday, August 25th at Boulder Reservoir. Current entry fees for the full distance 5430 (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run) are $295. Ironman Utah participants can get $95 off by going to the 5430 Tri web site, printing out the entry form and mailing it in. The discount is applicable to the full distance only.

The 5430 Triathlon debuted last year to rave reviews for its well-organized, user-friendly course, low-key atmosphere and a thousand enthusiastic volunteers. This year, local resident Dave Scott, the six-time Hawaii Ironman champion, has pitched in to help, assisting Spiegel in remapping the bike course, answering training questions on the race website and donating a week of training with his Boulder-based Dave Scott Multisport Club as well as a one-hour consultation. All participants in the 5430 Triathlon are automatically entered to win.

Full distance
The 2.4-mile swim features two loops in Boulder Reservoir. The 112-mile bike is two loops of a course that goes northeast almost to Carter Lake and back. The 26.2-mile marathon consists of three loops on soft surfaces around the Reservoir.

Relay teams of two, three and four persons are accepted in the full distance. Four-person relay teams will have one swimmer, one biker and two runners.

Half distance
The 1.2-mile swim features one loop in Boulder Reservoir. The 56-mile bike will be a one-loop course with the turnaround near Carter Lake. The 13.1-mile run will take place around Boulder Reservoir on soft surfaces.

The 5430 Triathlon is sanctioned by USA Triathlon. All participants must be a current member of USAT or pay a $7 one-day membership fee along with the registration fee.

The races benefit the ALS Association, the national not-for- profit health organization dedicated to the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's disease).

More information and online registration can be found at www.5430tri.com.
