South African Shadrack Hoff, 28, of Albuquerque, New Mexico,
won the 2002 Schlotzsky's Deli-Coca Cola Bun Run 5K when he
crossed the finish line in the astounding time of 13 minutes,
54.2 seconds, edging out Kenyans Sammy Nyamongo (13:54.5) and
Kibet Cherop (13:57.9) and a pack that included 13 other under-
15 finishers.
Included in the field of elite under-16 finishers -- an unheard-
of feat in
the south-central part of the country, especially considering
the hot and
muggy conditions during the Sunday's race -- was female winner
South African
Colleen De Reuck of Boulder, Colo., who clocked 15:28.6 and set
a new women's
Bun Run 5K
record. The previous record, 16:40, was set in 1998.
Hoff, whose personal bests for 5K and 10K are 13:14 and 27:43,
also set a
men's Bun Run 5K record on this year's new, faster course,
eclipsing the
previous Bun Run record, 14:20 also set in 1998. Hoff earned a
quick $3,000
from this year's celebratory $20,000 prize purse, the largest in
the Bun
Run's history.
Austinite Gilbert Tuhabonye, who won this year's Capitol 10,000
earlier this
month
(31:47), was top local male finisher at 14:40.9 and earned one
of two $1,000
"Austin
Runner" incentives added to the purse by John Wooley, president
and CEO of
Schlotzsky's, Inc. (NASDAQ: BUNZ), which has hosted the Bun Run
for 20 years
running, to pay homage to the company's Austin roots.
Top local female finisher was Carmen Ayala-Troncoso, with a time
of 16:52.3.
She won the Bun Run 5K in 2000.
"Our congratulations go out to every one of the Bun Run
finishers," said
Wooley. "What added so much to this year's Bun Run were the
world-class
elite runners. They made an exciting race even more exciting for
their
competitors as well as the onlookers who rally the runners along
the
course and cheer them at the finish line."
Wooley said Schlotzsky's plans to increase the race purse again
for the
2003 Bun Run to attract even more elite runners to the Bun Run
5K field.
Women's champ De Reuck beat Kenyan Naomi Wangui, winner of the
Newark
Distance Classic 20K (1:10:47), who was second with 16:29; Agnes
Ngunjiri's
16:40.8; Ayala-Troncoso; and Kenyan Martha Komu's 17:04.9
Preliminary estimates put the total number of 2002 Bun Run 5K
participants at
6,000, the largest field in its 20-year history, and the boon
for Bun Run
beneficiary Austin Sunshine Camps at $100,000.
