U.S. elite triathletes Sheila Taormina, Susan Williams finished
second and third and Doug Friman placed third at the Corner
Brook ITU World Cup in Newfoundland, Canada on Sunday.
Taormina, who also finished second at the International
Triathlon Union (ITU) World Cup in Edmonton last week, led for
most of the race, but was outrun by Canada's Jill Savege. Savege
won the race in 2 hours, 5 minutes, 26 seconds. Taormina
(Livonia, Mich.) was second in 2:05:59 and Williams (Denver,
Colo.) reached her very first World Cup podium in 2:06:21.
Kelly Rea of the United States finished 18th.
The U.S. men also had an impressive day. Not only did Friman
(Tucson, Ariz.) reach his first World Cup podium by finishing
third behind New Zealand's Hamish Carter and Bevan Docherty, but
the United States also put four other men in the top 10:
U.S. national champion Seth Wealing (Remington, Ind.) finished
fifth. Michael Smedley (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who took most
to the 2002 season off to work full time, finished eighth. Brian
Fleischmann (Jacksonville, Fla.) was ninth and Joe Umphenour
(Bellevue, Wash.) was 10th.
Andy Kelsey (Cupertino, Calif.), who is still coming back from a
broken collarbone suffered in training, finished 11th.
Friman used the fastest run of the day in 32:01 to work his way
into third place. Wealing had the third-fastest run in 32:31.
The U.S. women now hold the top three spots in the ITU world
rankings, as Barb Lindquist (Victor, Idaho) is first, Laura
Reback (North Palm Beach, Fla.) is second and Taormina is third.
The U.S. men are also moving up in the rankings as Hunter Kemper
(Longwood, Fla.) is 13th and Umphenour has cracked the top 20 in
19th.
