Irishman claims Gruene 10K on St. Patty's Day
March 19, 2002
Complete results from the Gruene 10,000
Southwest Texas State University track runner and 21-year old
Irish-American, Ryan Gorman, blazed to a 32:22 finish at the
hilly and scenic Gruene Texas 10,000 race on St. Patrick's Day.
Liza Hunter-Galvan, native New Zealander and middle-school
teacher living in San Antonio, also had a great race, winning
the female division and earning her Irish bouquet in 35:28.
The Gruene Texas 10,000 hosted hundreds of Central Texas runners
on a misty morning. Kicking off the event and celebrating
Gruene Hall, Texas's oldest operating dance hall, was musician
Thad Scott, at the start line with a live jazz sax version
of "The Star Spangled Banner." Along the running route and just
before the steepest hill, there was an Irish bagpiper playing
jigs and marches, inspiring the runners.
After the St. Patrick's Day running event, participants enjoyed
food and drink in the Gruene Hall bier garten as well as live
music from the rockabilly band, The Hubcaps, inside Gruene
Hall. The quaint and rustic town's retail shops, restaurants on
the Guadalupe River, and in-town wildflower paths were filled
with post-race celebrants for hours after the event.
The Gruene Texas 10,000 is in its 18th year, attracting more
elite runners every year. Next year, there will be substantial
cash prizes for the runners who now drive from San Antonio, San
Marcos and Austin, Texas.
RunTex now operates the race with chip timing. Paul Carrozza,
owner of RunTex, former All-American runner and Chairman of the
Texas Governor's Commission on Physical Fitness, feels the race
has the potential to become one of the state and nation's
premiere 10K races and is looking forward to promoting the race
further in the next year.
