With his win Friday in the 110m hurdles at the ISTAF '01
Golden League Grand Prix in Berlin, 1996 Olympic gold medalist
Allen Johnson
secured a share of the IAAF Golden League Jackpot of 50 kilos of
gold.
A three-time world outdoor champ (1995, '97, '01), Johnson
earned his
share of the Golden League Jackpot by winning the 110m hurdles
in 13.04
seconds (+1.0 meters per second). Anier Garcia of Cuba was
second in 13.15,
followed by Americans Dominique Arnold (3rd-13.21) and Mark
Crear
(4th-13.42).
Johnson's effort on Friday equals his seasonal best performance.
He also
ran 13.04 in winning the gold medal at 2001 IAAF World Outdoor
Championships
earlier this month in Edmonton, Canada. This marks the first
time during his
career that he has won a share of the Jackpot.
Johnson will split the Golden League Jackpot with fellow-
American Marion
Jones (100m), Romanian Violeta Szekely-Beclea (1,500m),
Switzerland's Andre
Bucher (800m), Morocco's Hicham El Guerrouj (2,000m) and Russian
Olga
Yegorova (5,000m).
The IAAF Golden League is comprised of seven events. To win a
share of
the Jackpot, athletes must win their event at five of the Golden
League
meets. The Jackpot is divided evenly among the winners. The
concept was
created to unify the elite individual meets in Europe.
In other events at Berlin, Kelli White, who grabbed the 200m
bronze medal
in Edmonton, along with a gold medal in the 4x100m relay,
finished third in
the women's 100m in 11.25 (+0.5 mps). Suziann Reid was second in
the women's
400 meters in 51.66 and Paul McMullen was eighth in the men's
800m in
1:45.71.
Two-time Olympian Amy Acuff was second in the women's high jump
with a
clearance of 1.93 meters/6 feet, 4 inches, and Mary Sauer was
fifth in the
women's pole vault with a jump of 4.16/13-7.75.
In relay action, five-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson
ran on a
U.S. 4x200-meter team that included Jerome Davis, Leonard Byrd
and Derrick
Brew. The U.S. squad won the event in 1:21.45.
