Maurice Greene and Marion Jones (pictured) led a group of
U.S. track and field stars who
provided their own Fourth of July fireworks at the Athletissima
2001 Grand
Prix Wednesday in Lausanne, Switzerland. Americans won seven of
the 17 events
at the event and turned in three world-leading times, performing
well despite
cool and breezy conditions.
Greene, the world record holder, Olympic champ and two-time
defending world
champion, won the 100 meters equaling his world best time this
season of 9.90
seconds. Greene defeated a strong field that included his
training partner
and Olympic silver medalist Ato Boldon, who finished second in
9.99, and 2000
Olympic fourth-place finisher Dwain Chambers of Britain, who was
third in
10.00.
Jones kept her win streak alive winning the women's 100 meters
in 11.04.
Olympic 4x100m relay gold medalist Chandra Sturrup of the
Bahamas was the
runner-up in 11.05, with Nigeria's Mercy Nku third in 11.06.
Other American winners Wednesday in Lausanne include 2000
Olympic 400-meter
hurdles gold medalist Angelo Taylor, who set the fastest time in
the world
this year of 47.95. Ramon Clay also turned in a world-leading
mark by
capturing the 200 meters in 20.05.
In field event competition, Jeff Hartwig won the pole vault with
a clearance
of 5.90 meters/19 feet, 4.25 inches, and Savante Stringfellow
led an American
sweep in the long jump, winning with a leap of 8.28/27-2. 2000
Olympic
eighth-place finisher Dwight Phillips was second (8.13/26-8.25),
and Kevin
Dilworth was third (8.07/26-5.75).
After winning in Zagreb last weekend, Jenny Adams captured the
100m hurdles
in 12.68. Adams defeated Delloreen Ennis-London of Jamaica
(12.73), and
Sydney Olympic silver medalist Glory Alozie of Nigeria (12.81).
