Americans look impressive in Lausanne
July 5, 2001

Maurice Greene and Marion Jones (pictured) led a group of U.S. track and field stars who provided their own Fourth of July fireworks at the Athletissima 2001 Grand Prix Wednesday in Lausanne, Switzerland. Americans won seven of the 17 events at the event and turned in three world-leading times, performing well despite cool and breezy conditions.

Greene, the world record holder, Olympic champ and two-time defending world champion, won the 100 meters equaling his world best time this season of 9.90 seconds. Greene defeated a strong field that included his training partner and Olympic silver medalist Ato Boldon, who finished second in 9.99, and 2000 Olympic fourth-place finisher Dwain Chambers of Britain, who was third in 10.00.

Jones kept her win streak alive winning the women's 100 meters in 11.04. Olympic 4x100m relay gold medalist Chandra Sturrup of the Bahamas was the runner-up in 11.05, with Nigeria's Mercy Nku third in 11.06.

Other American winners Wednesday in Lausanne include 2000 Olympic 400-meter hurdles gold medalist Angelo Taylor, who set the fastest time in the world this year of 47.95. Ramon Clay also turned in a world-leading mark by capturing the 200 meters in 20.05.

In field event competition, Jeff Hartwig won the pole vault with a clearance of 5.90 meters/19 feet, 4.25 inches, and Savante Stringfellow led an American sweep in the long jump, winning with a leap of 8.28/27-2. 2000 Olympic eighth-place finisher Dwight Phillips was second (8.13/26-8.25), and Kevin Dilworth was third (8.07/26-5.75).

After winning in Zagreb last weekend, Jenny Adams captured the 100m hurdles in 12.68. Adams defeated Delloreen Ennis-London of Jamaica (12.73), and Sydney Olympic silver medalist Glory Alozie of Nigeria (12.81).
