Several of the NCAAs top-ranked teams were in action at
conference
championship meets over the weekend.
Big 10: The University of Michigan's freshman standout
Alan Webb defeated a
solid field, completing the course in 23 minutes 19.9 seconds,
just ahead of
the University of Wisconsin's freshman Matt Tegenkamp (23:23.2),
who
finished fifth in the men's junior competition at the 2001 IAAF
World Cross
Country Championships in Belgium.
Wisconsin easily won the team competition with 28 points,
followed by
runner-up Michigan with 71 points and Michigan State with 94
points.
In the women's race, Michigan State placing four finishers in
the top 10 to
win the event with 35 points. Michigan was a distant second with
101 points,
with Wisconsin third with 106 points. Ann Somerville led the
Spartans with
her second-place finish in 17:06.9. Wisconsin's Bethany Brewster
won the
competition in 17:02.7.
Pac-10: In Scottsdale, Arizona, Stanford University's
men's and women's
teams dominated the competition. Stanford took four of the top
seven spots
in the men's competition, with Grant Robison leading the
Cardinal by winning
the event in 24:04.0. Stanford's men's team, ranked second in
the nation,
ran away with the team event with 28 points, with Arizona State
a distant
second with 75 points. Stanford's men's squad has won the Pac-
10s five out
of the last six years
Lauren Fleshman won her first Pac-10 individual women's
championship for
Stanford in 20:08.1. The top-ranked Cardinal women's team won
the event for
the sixth year in a row with 27 points. Arizona was a distant
second with 64
points.
Big 12: The top-ranked University of Colorado men's team
and 10th-ranked
women's team swept the Big 12 Cross Country Championships in
Norman,
Oklahoma. The Buffaloes have won six consecutive men's Big 12
cross country
titles, and the women have won five of the last six.
Jorge Torres (23:35) captured the men's individual title for the
Buffs, with
Dathan Ritzenhein (23:47) and Ed Torres (24:12) placing second
and third
respectively. Colorado's Molly Austin won the women's
championship in 20:12.
SEC: The University of Arkansas also enjoyed a team sweep
at the
Southeastern Conference Championships over the weekend in
Auburn, Alabama.
Andreina Byrd (19:08) and Christin Wurth (19:34) finished 1-2
for the Lady
Razorbacks in women's competition, as Arkansas won the team
scoring with 35
points. Tennessee was second with 71 points.
Arkansas dominated the men's team event with 24 points, with
Alabama second
with 85 points. David Kimani of Alabama won the event in 23:47,
with three
Razorbacks right behind him, including Alistair Cragg, 2nd-
23:49, Daniel
Lincoln 3rd-24:08 and Silverus Kimei 4th-24:19.
Big East: At Van Cortlandt Park on Friday, Connecticut's
Dan Wilson grabbed
the lead from Notre Dame's Luke Watson in the final 400 meters
to win the
Big East Conference individual men's title, covering the five-
mile course in
24:22.4. Watson, who was the runner-up in 24:22.9, led the
Fighting Irish to
their second team title in three years with 49 points.
Catherine Guiney of Boston College won the women's Big East
crown,
completing the 3.7-mile course in 20:27. Georgetown's Marni
Kruppa was
second in 20:27. The Hoyas captured the women's team title with
36 points.
