Message: I see that RTN has interviewed the Pengiun for this month's issue. I haven't read it (nor will I), but I find it both hilarious and disturbing that this wanker is a "running" celebrity. Hey, what if I slow way down, start finishing 5K's in 45 minutes, and stop for donuts and pizza during my marathons...then will RTN interview me?
Aren't there enough real runners out there to feature without sinking to this level?

Message: I just read the article only because you told me you would not. That was like making me read it. Anyway I think the moral of the story is that running can be a life long thing, so if new runners are so quick to do a marathon or 6 minute miles then they may get burned out. I guess it is the stop and smell the roses attitude. That probably works for some people but if not you then just skip the two page article and read about some crap like steroids baseball vrs track and field.

Message: I am so sick of the penguin idiot. Why is he famous? He sucks! Hey, I've got an idea. Why don't we find the worst basketball player ever, give him a column in a basketball magazine, and bring him in to speak at basketball clinics. That would be great! NOT! The pengiun blows chunks.

Message: Hey I must be in the front row. I'm the worst baseball player ever and I have become famous being Mr. Belvedere's boss and a commerical and announcer legend.
Must be in the front row.

Message: I've always had a problem with people slamming John Bingham. If you are running even sub 19:00 in your 5K's, the guy doesn't necessarily represent you, okay? What he does represent is the idea to stay healthy and live a long, healthy life and love the act of doing it through a sport we ALL love.
Besides, do you think there could possibly be corporate sponsorship and even a trickle of prize money in the White Rock or (hp)Houston Marathons without those extra 14,000 or so participants with no hope (or care) for victory, or at least your definition of it?
So, fast elitist guy, give a big cheer for USA Fit, the TIT, and any other group that encourages couch dwellers to get out the door and on to a better life. They pay for those HPD officers that keep those streets clear.

Message: Was with you running frog right up to the poiint where you started touting the training programs. In answer to your question do I think there would be prize money w/o these programs, yes I do. Look back a purses of races in the days before these groups existed. Second, these are the same groups that claim they need the course open longer so they can get to the finish line on time. Meaning that city streets are tied up longer increasing hostility toward the race from the general public who has seen street closings go from 5 hours to 8 or 9 hrs. in some cases. Your patting yourself on the back for paying for those HPD officers is silly, if these groups didn't exist the police would not have to be out on the course as long and would not charge as much. Why should'nt you pay you're the reason they are out htere all day.

Message: Tgarr is right. There WERE nice purses before all the training groups sprang up. And, imagine this...we were able to complete marathons WITHOUT fuel belts full of concoctions. We drank what was at the Aid stations. There WERE no fuel belts OR Gu!

Message: Tgarr is right. There was plenty of money in road race prize pots before the pengiuns and gallowalkers hijacked the sport and made it into something that doesn't even resemble a sport. Also, why do you think marathon race entry fees now cost a cool 70-80 bucks or even more? Because they have to keep the course open all stinking day for the pengiuns.

Message: tgarr, I referenced the groups for one big reason. These groups represent the sedentary people I mentioned in my first post. When I mentioned the groups, you knew exactly the kind of runner I was talking about. John Bingham represents these people, for the most part.
As far as purses go, you are right. They existed. But come on. Major corporations will not dish out any money in 2004 unless it serves their interests, and that means focusing on a section of the public with the most disposable income to spend.
I'm very sure the Houston Marathon would once again be a multi-loop course around Memorial Park without an extra 14,000 or so people.
One more thing. oldtimer, if you had just added the sentence, "And we liked it that way!", your post would have read dead on like one of Dana Carvey's angry old man bits when he was on Saturday Night Live.

Message: Oldtimer is also right. Water belts, gu, Powerbars, cameras, cell phones. People have climbed Everest with less crap that some of today's marathoners carry with them.
