you folks are hilarious! I don't compare running to anything else, running is running.. period. We all Need the John Binghams, as well as the Bill Rodgers, and Galloways to keep the sport whole..
Running is the only sport where the Amatuers can be in the same game as the World class competitors, And believe me.. If you're world class, we ("unreal runners")certainly aren't going to slow you down.
Show me the rule book where you have to be competitive, and you constantly have to get faster and better until something gives. Then what? If you can't keep up with the "real runners" you aren't allowed to run anymore?
My rule book says: Run - have fun - run more.
And look at it this way.. All that pushing and training and getting better will get you all the goodies at the finish line.. Where as my slow, easy, enjoying things as I go, layed back pace will not get me any goodies because they will all be gone when I arrive. So see? there is justice.

Good points, spooner you make alot of sense. Truth be known though, it may not seem like it I'm laughing too. Watching the way people argue is a good thing sometimes. Nice points, and well put.

Seems kind of odd that one of the "running is for everybody, we shouldn't focus on competition because that makes you an elitist jerk" crowd challenged me to a competitive race. Where you at Steve????
